A Great Difference
In 2001, CareerMakers contracted with my employer for job search training as the company was closing. The company felt that CareerMakers could provide insight and direction, and help guide us in seeking employment opportunities. I took two half-day training sessions with Pam Gross and Peter Paskill.
I was first and foremost impressed with their style and approach to "where does one go after a downsizing, closure or layoff" in terms of not where to just get help, but how do I best prepare myself to move forward. After participating in these sessions, I explored further what their full program was all about.
This was a significant point in my life, and I felt it was a time for assessment, because a potentially major change was possible. What CareerMakers offered was an opportunity to invest in myself, and provide guidance (with me doing all the work, of course) in a course of direction that felt right!
I needed tools and methods to help me make a career transition into a different marketplace. I left CareerMakers fully satisfied. Their program worked for me. I thought that regardless of where I landed, the tools they provided were invaluable. CareerMakers helped me identify my skills and abilities, and then, how to transfer them to any situation. It was an incredible experience - and fun!
CareeMakers enabled me to land a job of a lifetime - as Development Director for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In this position, I am engaged in a new career with many opportunities and areas for advancement.
I came to the table with some community relations background, some project management skills and some supervisory skills. I did not have the typical "experience" that this type of position required. However, I sought this position after identifying it was "the job" that I wanted. I was successful in selling my transferable skills, and convincing this fine organization that I had the skills they required. I trusted the process and applied what I learned.
Careermakers has a good thing going for it. I'm proud to say that I am one of their successes! Thank you, Peter, Pam and Anne! I'm making a greater difference because of you!
