Success Story: Carolyn Wilson

Cowgirl at Heart

My first contact with CareerMakers was in 1989 when Homer Spear was presenting their outplacement service program to the HR Management group at ESCO Corporation (my employer at the time).

ESCO was looking to incorporate outplacement into our HR business plan in order to be more proactive in our downsizing efforts. The Lifetime Program sounded very good, but in order for me to recommend it to others in the organization, I wanted to experience the process myself. Home Spear, the CareerMakers representative, was very convincing in his marketing efforts - so I enrolled in the two-week class.

I wanted to be sure that CareerMakers' training process could really assist ESCO employees in their job transitions. I am not a fan of taking any training without some type of follow-up. You can sit in a classroom, do all the required elements of the training, and leave with a new sense of self, but it's the follow-through and the reconnecting that keeps us attuned to our ever-changing needs. By enrolling myself, I would be able to judge CareerMakers on what I considered to be the most important aspect.

I had to see if what they were saying was true!

After the two-week session, my first impression was confirmed - the CareerMakers staff had true compassion and desire to help each of us. It shows in everything they do.

When you consider that the majority of folks entering the CareerMakers door are in some state of major flux in their life, the staff has their work cut out for them from the get-go.

I admire the staff's ability to take a client through those difficult steps of rebuilding their lives and careers - in a genuine, sincere way that doesn't "do it for them", but seeks to help discover the "right path" for each individual. There is inclusion and accountability -and successes are celebrated.

I feel it's necessary to guide people into their uncomfortable zones - to take those risks to change - and to put some reality to those dreams that they have always carried in their back pocket. If we don't take those dreams out and explore them, we will never know what we could be. CareerMakers does this for people. Their upfront and honest feedback is invaluable.

CareerMakers allowed me to work on Me! Most of us don't take or have the time to devote to self-work - it is usually on the back burner - something we'll get to when time permits. Well, time never permits - because it is tough work to look into that mirror and confront the face staring back at you. In the program and in follow-up discussions with Anne Hudson, I learned to accept my weaknesses, build upon my strengths and go in search of more fun in my life. It's not all about work - it's OK if I want to be a cowgirl after all!!
